Moving with kids: a stress-free timeline

Moving is a big change for kids, who often have less control over the process than adults do. A little extra structure — and a bit earlier notice — makes the whole thing land a lot softer.
Tell them early, and let them ask questions
As soon as the move is confirmed, tell kids in age-appropriate terms: what's changing, what's staying the same, and roughly when. Leave room for them to ask questions more than once — the same worry often comes up a few times before it settles.
Let them pack their own "keep close" box
Give each kid a box or bag for the things they want with them, not in the moving truck or in storage — favourite toys, a blanket, anything they'd be upset to be separated from even briefly. It gives them a sense of control over a process they otherwise don't get much say in.

Keep their room last on, first off
Pack a child's room last so their space stays familiar as long as possible, and unpack it first at the new place so they have a settled spot to land in on night one.
Storage can buy you breathing room
If there's a gap between move-out and move-in, or the new place needs work before everything fits, a short-term storage unit can hold non-essentials so moving day itself is less chaotic for younger kids underfoot.
