Climate control: do you actually need it?

Climate-controlled units keep temperature and humidity within a set range year-round, instead of tracking the outdoor weather like a standard unit does. It costs more — but for the right items, it's cheap insurance.

What standard units expose you to

A non-climate-controlled unit can swing from well below freezing in a Canadian winter to well over 30°C in summer, with humidity that rises and falls the same way. Most household goods handle that fine. Some don't.

Items that benefit most

Wood furniture can warp or crack as it expands and contracts with temperature swings. Electronics and appliances are sensitive to condensation. Photos, documents, artwork, musical instruments, and leather are all vulnerable to both heat and humidity. Wine and some medications have strict temperature requirements.

When a standard unit is fine

Plastic totes, metal tools, most seasonal gear, and vehicles generally do fine in a standard unit. If your list is mostly boxes of clothes, kitchenware, or holiday decorations, you likely don't need to pay the premium.

The bottom line

Sort what you're storing into "replaceable and durable" versus "sentimental, sensitive, or expensive to replace." If the second pile has more than a box or two, climate control is worth pricing out.
